TheFTOgeneisthemostrobustgeneforcommonobesitycharacterizedtodate.FTOgeneexpressionhasbeenfoundtobesignificantlyupregulatedinthehypothalamusofratsafterfooddeprivationandstronglynegativelycorrelatedwiththeexpressionoforexinpeptidewhichisinvolvedinthestimulationoffoodintake(FredrickssonRetal.,2008).DeletionanalysisofFTOgeneinmiceshowedthatFtoisfunctionallyinvolvedinthecontrolofbothenergyintakeandenergyexpenditure(FischerJetal.,2009).
