Periostinisamatricellularprotein,i.e.anextracellularmatrixproteinthatinteractsbothwithotherECMproteinsandwithcell-surfacereceptors.Likemanyothermatricellularproteins,thefunctionofperiostinisimportantbothinembryonicdevelopmentandintheremodelingofadulttissuesinresponsetopathologicalinsults.Periostinwasoriginallyisolatedasanosteoblast-specificMarkerthatfunctionsasacelladhesionmoleculeforpreosteoblastsandisthoughttobeinvolvedinosteoblastrecruitment,attachmentandspreADIng(Kruzynska-FrejtagA.etal.,2004).Periostinhasrecentlybeenshowntopromotecollagenfibrogenesis,inhibitdifferentiationofProgenitorcellsintocardiomyocytesandtobeessentialinmaintainingthebiomechanicalpropertiesoftheadultmyocardium(Norrisetal.,2008)
