BIOLOGicalSignificance:Collapse
Periostinisamatricellularprotein,i.e.anextracellularmatrixproteinthatinteractsbothwithotherECMproteinsandwithcell-surfacereceptors.Likemanyothermatricellularproteins,thefunctionofperiostinisimportantbothinembryonicdevelopmentandintheremodelingofadulttissuesinresponsetopathologicalinsults.Periostinwasoriginallyisolatedasanosteoblast-specificMarkerthatfunctionsasacelladhesionmoleculeforpreosteoblastsandisthoughttobeinvolvedinosteoblastrecruitment,attachmentandspreADIng(Kruzynska-FrejtagA.etal.,2004).Periostinhassincebeendemonstratedtobeimportantinheartvalvedevelopmentandmyocardialinfarctionbecauseitpromotescollagenfibrogenesis,inhibitsdifferentiationofProgenitorcellsintocardiomyocytesandisessentialinmaintainingthebiomechanicalpropertiesoftheadultmyocardium(Norrisetal.,2008).
