DARPP-32isadopamine(DA)andcAMP-regulated~32kDaphosphoproteinthatisassociatedwithdopaminoceptiveneurons(Fienbergetal.,1998).TheproteininhibitsproteinphosphataseIwhenitisphosphorylatedonThr34.Incontrast,whenDARPP-32isphosphorylatedonThr75theproteinactsasaninhibitorofPKA(Bibbetal.,1999).PhosphorylationofDARPP-32isthoughttoplayacriticalroleintheregulationofdopaminergicneurotransmission.Inaddition,theactivityofDARPP-32isalsothoughttoplayimportantrolesintheactionsofalcohol,caffeineandProzac®(Maldveetal.,2002;Lindskogetal.,2002;Svenningssonetal.,2002).
