Thespectrinfamilyofcytoskeletalproteinsiscomprisedof2alphagenes(α1andα2)andfivebetagenes(β1-β5).Spectrinshavebeenshowntofunctionasscaffoldingproteinsinmechanicalsupportoftheplasmamembraneaswellasbindothermembraneproteinsandlipids(BennettandBaines2001).Defectsinspectringeneshavebeenlinkedtosomeformsofhereditaryspherocytosis,atypeofauto-hemolyticanemiawhichischaracterizedbysphericalredbloodcellsthataremorepronetolysis(EberandLux2004).
