Alpha-synucleinisapresynapticneuronalproteinthatisthoughttobeinvolvedintheformationofSNAREcomplexes.Mostsignificantly,aggregatedalphasynucleinisoneofthemajorcomponentsfoundintheLewybodiesthatoccurinParkinson’sdisease(PD)andotherneurodegenerativedisorders(Okochietal.,2000).Mutationofthealpha-synucleingeneisassociatedwithfamilialformsofPD(Newmannetal.,2002).Recentevidencesuggeststhatphosphorylationofalpha-synucleinatSer129playsaroleintheformationofinclusionsinPD(Smithetal.,2005;Masliahetal.,2005).
