Alpha-synucleinisapresynapticneuronalproteinthatisthoughttobeinvolvedintheformationofSNAREcomplexes.Mostsignificantly,aggregatedalpha-synucleinisoneofthemajorcomponentsfoundintheLewybodiesthatoccurinParkinson’sdisease(PD)andotherneurodegenerativedisorders(Okochietal.,2000).EarlyonsetParkinson’sdiseasemaybecausedbyaduplicationortriplicationofoneofthealphasynucleingenes(ChartierHarlinMCetal.,2004andSingleton,ABetal.,2005).Alpha-synucleinisalsofoundintheLewybodiesofpatientswithdiffuseLewybodydiseaseandinclusionsinglialcellsinthebrainsofpatientswithmultiplesystematrophy(MSA)andamyotrophiclateralsclerosis(ALS).
