Gamma-aminobutyricacid(GABA)istheprimaryinhibitoryneurotransmitterinthecentralnervoussystem,causingahyperpolarizationofthemembranethroughtheopeningofaCl−channelassociatedwiththeGABAAreceptor(GABAA-R)subtype.GABAplasmamembranetransporters(GATs)influencesynapticneurotransmissionbyhighaffinityuptakeandreleaseofGABA.Todate,fourdistinctGABAtransportershavebeenidentified:GAT-1,GAT-2,GAT-3,andBGT-1.GAT-3hasbeenfoundtobelocalizedtoastrocyteswithinthecerebralcortexindicatingthatthistransportermediatesGABAuptakeintoglialcells(Minellietal.,1996).
