Tubulinisthemajorconstituentofmicrotubules,existingasaheterodimeroftheαandβsubunits.ThebetaIIIisoformoftubulinisfoundalmostexclusivelyinneuronalprocessesofadulttissuesandisthereforeanexcellentMarkerforneurons.Neuronspecific,posttranslationalmodificationswithintheC-terminaldomainofbetaIIItubulinhavebeenshowntobedevelopmentallyregulatedsuggestingthattheymayservetomodulatetheinteractionoftubulinwithmicrotubuleassociatedproteins(Leeetal.,1990).Additionally,betaIIItubulinhasbeenfoundtobehighlyexpressedincancercellssuchassmallcelllungcancer,largecellneuroendocrinecarcinomaandadenocarcinomasandiscorrelatedwithanincreasinghistologicaldegreeofmalignancy(Katsetosetal.,2003)
