FragileXMentalRetardationProtein(FMRP)isanRNA-bindingproteinthatplaysanessentialroleincognitivebrainfunction.MutationsintheFMR1gene,whichcodesforFMRP,canresultinfragileXsyndrome,autism,aswellasothercognitivedeficits(Brownetal.,1998,Goodlin-Jonesetal.,2004).PhosphorylationofthehighlyconservedSer499hasbeenshowntotriggerhierarchicalphosphorylationofnearbyserinesandmayplayaroleinsuppressingtargetmRNAtranslation(Cemanetal.,2003,Narayananetal.2008).
