MECP2(Methyl-CpGBindingProtein2)isachromosomalproteinthatbindstomethylatedDNA.Itcanbindspecificallytoasinglemethyl-CpGpairandisnotinfluencedbysequencesflankingthemethyl-CpGs.MECP2hasbeenshowntomediatetranscriptionalrepressionthroughinteractionwithhistonedeacetylaseandthecorepressorSIN3A.DefectsinMECP2arethecauseofRettsyndrome(RTT).RTTisanX-linkeddominantdisease,itisaprogressiveneurologicdevelopmentaldisorderandoneofthemostcommoncausesofmentalretardationinfemales.RecentstudieshavereportedanewphosphorylationsiteatSer80.PhosphorylationanddephosphorylationofthissitemaybeinvolvedinmodulatingthedynamicfunctionofMECP2inneuronstransitingbetweenrestingandactivestateswithinneuralcircuitsthatunderliebehaviors.(Taoetal.,2009)
