β-cateninisacentralcomponentofthecadherincelladhesioncomplexandplaysanessentialroleinneuraldevelopmentintheWingless/Wntsignalingpathway(DingandDale,2002;Polakis,2000).Theroleofβ-cateninintheseprocessesisthoughtregulatedbythesequentialphosphorylationofSer29Ser33,Ser37andThr41byglycogensynthasekinase3β(GSK3β)(Liuetal.,2002).Thishyperphosphorylationpromotestheubiquitylationandtargeteddestructionofβ-catenin.Mutationsincomponentsofthisphosphorylationregulatedprocessthatpreventβ-cateninhyperphosphorylationbyGSK3βarestronglyassociatedwithcancers(Wangetal.,2003;Polakis,2000;Liuetal.,2002).
