Gap-43isthoughttohaveanimportantroleindevelopmentandplasticitybecauseitisexpressedathighlevelsinneuronalgrowthconesduringdevelopmentandduringaxonalregeneration(BenowitzandRouttenberg,1997).ThereisalsoevidencefromknockoutanimalsthatGap-43servestoamplifypathfindingsignalsfromthegrowthcone(Strittmatteretal.,1995).Gap-43isthoughttomediateatleastsomeoftheseeffectsviainteractionwithactin.Importantly,phosphorylationatSer41byproteinkinaseC(CatalogNo.1609-PKC)modulatestheinteractionofGap-43withactin(Heetal.,1997)andmayalsoaffectneurotransmitterreleaseduringformsofplasticitylikeLTP(Huloetal.,2002).
