CholineacetyltransferaseisaneuronalenzymewhichcatalyzesthereactionbetweenAcetylCoAandcholineresultingintheformationofacetylcholine.ItisthereforefoundprimarilyincholinergicneuronsmakingitavaluableMarkerfordiseasesassociatedwithdecreasedcholinergicfunctionsuchasSchizophrenia,Alzheimer’sdisease(AD)andDownsyndrome(Holtetal.1999).DecreasedcholineacetyltransferaseactivityinparticularhasbeenshowninSchizophrenicsubjects(Karsonetal1993).IthasfurThermorebeendemonstratedthatinpatientswithAD,therearesignificantlylowerlevelsofcorticalChATthatcorrelatewithseverityofthediseaseasmeasuredbylossofneuropsychologicalfunction(Baskinetal.1999).
