Voltage-gatedK+channelsareimportantdeterminantsofneuronalmembraneexcitABIlity.Moreover,differencesinK+channelexpressionpatternsanddensitiescontributetothevariationsinactionpotentialwaveformsandrepetitivefiringpatternsevidentindifferentneuronalcelltypes(Maletic-Savaticetal.,1995;Pongs,1999;BlaineandRibera,1998;BurgerandRibera,1996).TheKv3.1potassiumchannelisexpressedathighlevelsinneuronsthatcharacteristicallyfirerapidtrainsofactionpotentials(Ganetal.,1999).Particularlyhighlevelsofthischannelarefoundinneuronsoftheauditorybrainstem.Theseneuronsappeartoparticipateinneuralcircuitsthatdeterminetheintensityandtimingofauditorystimuliandusethisinformationtodeterminethelocationofsoundsinspace(vonHehnetal.,2004).
