TheactivatingtranscriptionfactorATF2(alsocalledCRE-BP1)bindstobothAP-1andCREDNAresponseelementsandisamemberoftheATF/CREBfamilyofleucinezipperproteins(Maekawaetal.,1989).ATF2hasbeenimplicatedinthetranscriptionalregulationofanumberofgenesincludingcytokines,cellcyclecontrolandapoptosis.Variousformsofcellularstress,includinginflammatorycytokinesandUVirrADIation,stimulatethetranscriptionalactivityofATF2(Ivanovetal.,2003;Mortonetal.,2004).StressinducedATFdependenttranscriptionisdependentonphosphorylationofATF(Fuchsetal.,2000);Mortonetal.,2004).Serine490andserine498arenovelphosphorylationsitesonATFthathaverecentlybeenidentified.ATF2isparticularlyabundantinthebrainandtheATF2familyoftranscriptionfactorsisconsideredanimportantsubstrateofsignalsupstreamoftheactivationofgenesassociatedwithneuronalgrowthanddifferentiation(KarinandHunter,1995).ATFexpressionhasalsobeenlinkedtothedepressioninhumans(Laifenfeldetal.,2004).
