Retinoicacid(RA;activemetaboliteofvitaminA)playsaprominentroleinregulatingthetransitionofproliferatingprecursorcells(suchascarcinomacellsandneuronalprecursors)topostmitoticdifferentiatedcells(Joshietal.,2005).TheRetinoidXReceptors(RXRs)family(RXRα,βandγ)preferentiallybind9-cis-RAandregulategenetranscriptionbyformingheterodimerswithasecondfamilyofRAreceptors.RAshavebeensuggestedtopotentiallyplayatherapeuticroleincervicalcancer(Abuetal.,2005).RAsareknowntoplaykeyrolesinneuronaldevelopmentandanincreasingbodyofevidenceindicatesthatretinoidsignalingmayregulatesynapticplasticityandassociatedlearningandmemorybehaviors(LaneandBailey,2005).
