Thenuclearporecomplex(NPC)isaverylargestructuremadeupofatleast50differentproteinsthatspanthedoublemembraneofthenuclearenvelopefunctioningasagatewayformacromoleculartrafficbetweenthecytoplasmandthenucleus(NakielnyandDreyfuss,1999).DiscretenuclearporecomplexproteinsornucleoporinssuchasNUP98,NUP180andp62havebeenimplicatedinautoimmunediseaseandcancer.Patientswithprimarybiliarycirrhosis(PBC)frequentlyproduceautoantibodiesagainstp62andNUP180(Wilkenetal.,1993;Nesheretal.,2001)whileNUP98translocationshavebeenfoundinpatientswithacutemyelogenousleukemia(AML)(Jajuetal.2001)
