BIOLOGicalSignificance:Collapse
Vimentinisthemajorproteinsubunitofthe10nmorintermediatefilaments(IFs)foundinmanykindsofmesenchymalandepithelialcellsaswellasdevelopingneuronalandastrocyticprecursorcellsintheCNS.Vimentinisthoughttobecriticallyinvolvedinlymphocyteadhesionandtransmigration(NieminenMetal.2006).CopolymersarefrequentlyformedbetweenvimentinandotherIFs,suchasGFAP(inmanykindsofastrocytes),desmin(inmusclecells)andneurofilamentproteins(indevelopingneurons).AntibodiestovimentinareusefulinstudiesofstemcellsandgenerallytorevealthefilamentousCytoskeleton.Recentstudiessuggestthatvimentinaffectsprostatecancercellsmotilityandinvasiveness(Zhaoetal.2008).
