Gamma-aminobutyricacid(GABA)istheprimaryinhibitoryneurotransmitterinthecentralnervoussystem.TherearetwomajorclassesofGABAreceptors:theGABAAandtheGABABsubtypeofreceptors.GABABreceptorsareheterodimericGprotein-coupledreceptorsthatmediateslowsynapticinhibitioninthecentralnervoussystem.IthasrecentlybeendemonstratedthatAMPKbindsdirectlytoGABABreceptorsandphosphorylatesS783inthecytoplasmictailoftheR2subunitandthatS783playsacriticalroleinenhancingneuronalsurvivalafterischemiaasphosphorylationofS783isevidentinmanybrainregionsandisincreaseddramaticallyafterischemicinjurytothebrain(Kuramotoetal.,2007).
