TheionchannelsactivatedbyglutamatethataresensitivetoN-methyl-D-aspartate(NMDA)aredesignatedNMDAreceptors(NMDAR).TheNMDARplaysanessentialroleinmemory,neuronaldevelopmentandithasalsobeenimplicatedinseveraldisordersofthecentralnervoussystemincludingAlzheimer’s,epilepsyandischemicneuronalcelldeath(Grosshansetal.,2002;Wentholdetal.,2003;CarrollandZukin,2002).TheNMDAreceptorisalsooneoftheprincipalmoleculartargetsforalcoholintheCNS(Lovingeretal.,1989;Alvestadetal.,2003;Snelletal.,1996).ChannelswithphysiologicalcharacteristicsareproducedwhentheNR1subunitiscombinedwithoneormoreoftheNMDAR2(NR2A-D)subunits(Ishiietal.,1993).Recently,phosphorylationofTyrosine1325oftheNR2AsubunithasbeenshowntobeincreasedinhumanbraintissuesectionsfromHIV-infectedindividualswithencephalitis(Kingetal.,2010).Inaddition,Tyr1325phosphorylationhasbeenlinkedwithdepression-relatedbehavior(Taniguchietal.,2009).
