TheionchannelsactivatedbyglutamatethataresensitivetoN-methyl-Daspartate(NMDA)aredesignatedNMDAreceptors(NMDAR).TheNMDARplaysanessentialroleinmemory,neuronaldevelopmentandithasalsobeenimplicatedinseveraldisordersofthecentralnervoussystemincludingAlzheimer’s,epilepsyandischemicneuronalcelldeath(Grosshansetal.,2002;Wentholdetal.,2003;CarrollandZukin,2002).TheNMDAreceptorisalsooneoftheprincipalmoleculartargetsforalcoholintheCNS(Lovingeretal.,1989;Alvestadetal.,2003;Snelletal.,1996).TheNMDARisalsopotentiatedbyproteinphosphorylation(Luetal.,1999).TheNR2CsubunitofthereceptoristhoughttoinfluencetheNMDARconductancelevel(Ebralidzeetal.,1996).PhosphorylationofSer1244hasbeenshowntoregulateNMDAreceptorchannelfunction(Chenetal.,2006).
