Inmammals,thereareseveralidentifiedisoformsofp21-activatedproteinkinasesorPAKs:α-PAK(alsoknownasPAK-1)andβ-PAK(alsoknownasPAK-3)aremostlybrain-specific,while-PAK(alsoknownasPAK-2)isexpressedubiquitously(Jakobietal.,2003).MutationsofthegenecodingforPAK-3areassociatedwithX-linkedmentalretardationandrecentworkindicatesthatPAK-3isakeyregulatorofsynapseformationandplasticityinthehippocampus(Bodaetal.,2004).PAK-3isthoughttoplayakeyroleinregulationofcellshapeandmotilityaswellascelldeath(Jakobietal.,2003;Walteretal.,1998).AutophosphorylationofThr402intheproteinhasbeenfoundtobeessentialforactivationofPAK(Jakobietal.,2000).
