Itiswellknownthatthecontrolofgeneexpressioninvolvesactivationofproteinkinasecascadesthatregulatetranscriptionfactorswithinthenucleus(KarinandHunter,1995).ThecyclicAMPresponseelementbindingprotein(CREB)isoneofthebestcharacterizedstimulus-inducedtranscriptionfactors(Montminy,1997).Thistranscriptionfactorisacomponentofintracellularsignalingeventsthatregulateawiderangeofbiologicalfunctions,fromspermatogenesistocircADIanrhythmsandmemory(ShaywitzandGreenberg,1999;Silvaetal.,1998).AvarietyofproteinkinasesincludingproteinkinaseA(PKA),mitogen-activatedproteinkinases(MAPKs),andCa2+/calmodulin-dependentproteinkinases(CaMKs)phosphorylateCREBatserine133(Ser133),andphosphorylationofSer133arerequiredforCREB-mediatedtranscription(Johannessenetal.,2004;Kornhauseretal.,2002).
