Interferonsarewidelyusedtherapeuticagentsbecauseoftheirantitumorandantiviraleffectsandbecauseoftheirmodulatoryeffectsontheimmunesystem(Biron,2001;Kirkwood,2002).ThesecytokinesproducetheireffectsbybindingtotheType1Interferon-αReceptor(IFNAR1).Downregulationofthisreceptorplaysakeyroleindeterminingthemagnitudeanddurationofcytokinesignaling.ThisdownregulationisthoughttobeinfluencedbyphosphorylationofSerine535and539intheIFNAR1(Kumaretal.,2003).
