ThethreeMitogen-ActivatedProteinKinases(MAPKs)areevolutionarilyconservedproteinkinasesthatcontrolavastarrayofcellularprocesses.p38MAPKisoneofthesekinasesanditisactivatedbybothinflammatorycytokinesandbystress(JohnsonandLapadat,2002;ShiandGaestel,2002).Thep38MAPKisthoughttobeparticularlyimportantindiseaseslikeasthmaandautoimmunitybutitalsoplaysimportantrolesinthestressresponseofthenervoussystem(PhilipandArmstead,2003;Yingetal.,2002).LiketheotherMAPKs,p38isactivatedbyadualspecificitykinasethatphosphorylatesThr180andTyr182(Linetal.,1995).
