Polo-likekinasesareimportantregulatorsofcellcycleprogression.PLK1isahighlyconservedSer/Thrkinasethathasessentialrolesintheformationofmitoticbipolarspindles(vanVugtetal.,2004).DeregulatedexpressionofPLK’sisdetectedinmanytypesofcancerandassociatedwithoncogenesis(Takeietal.,2005).IthasbeenproposedthatPLK1functionisalteredatdifferentstagesofmitosisthroughconsecutivephosphorylationeventsatSer137andThr210(vandeWeerdtetal.,2005).
