SNAP25(Synaptosomalassociatedproteinof25kDa)isapresynapticplasmamembraneproteinthatiswidelydistributedthroughoutthebrainandinvolvedintheregulationofneurotransmitterrelease.DecreasedlevelsofSNAP25havebeenfoundinthebrainsofpatientswithDownSyndromeandAlzheimer’sDisease(Greberetal.,1999).Inaddition,asignificantreductioninthehippocampalexpressionofSNAP25hasalsobeenfoundinpatientswithSchizophrenia(Fatemietal.,2001).IncreasingevidencesuggeststhatSNAP-25alsomodulatesvariousionchannels,includingvoltagegatedcalciumchannels(VGCCs)(Pozzielal.,2008).ActivationofPKCresultsinthephosphorylationofSNAP-25onSer187isbelievedtocauseinhibitionofVGCC(Pozzielal.,2008).SinceSer187phosphorylationistransientlyinducedbyneuronalactivity,SNAP25createsanegativefeedbackmechanismforcontrollingneuronalexcitABIlity(Pozzielal.,2008).
