BIOLOGicalSignificance:Collapse
SNAP25(Synaptosomalassociatedproteinof25kDa)isapresynapticplasmamembraneproteinthatiswidelydistributedthroughoutthebrainandinvolvedintheregulationofneurotransmitterrelease.DecreasedlevelsofSNAP25havebeenfoundinthebrainsofpatientswithDownSyndromeandAlzheimer’sDisease(Greberetal.,1999).Inaddition,asignificantreductioninthehippocampalexpressionofSNAP25hasalsobeenfoundinpatientswithSchizophrenia(Fatemietal.,2001).
