SynapsinIplaysakeyroleinsynapticplasticityinthebrain(Fengetal.,2002;Nayaketal.,1996).ThiseffectisdueinlargeparttotheABIlityofthesynapsinstoregulatetheavailabilityofsynapticvesiclesforrelease.Inadditiontoitsroleinplasticity,theexpressionofsynapsinIisapreciseindicatorofsynapseformation(MooreandBernstein,1989;Stoneetal.,1994).Thus,SynapsinIimmunocytochemistryprovidesavaluabletoolforthestudyofsynaptogenesis.Theroleofsynapsininsynapticplasticityandinsynaptogenesisisregulatedbyphosphorylation(Jovanovicetal.,2001;Kaoetal.,2002).
