Synaptobrevin(akaVAMP)isanintegralmembraneproteinofsynapticvesiclesthatplaysamajorroleintheformationoflargerSNAREcomplexes,alongwithSNAP-25andsyntaxin.Synaptobrevinhasbeenshowntobeessentialfortwofastsynapse-specificmembranetraffickingprocesses:fastexocytosisforneurotransmitterreleaseandfastendocytosisthatmediatesrapidrecyclingofsynapticvesicles(Deaketal.,2004).DecreasedlevelsofsynaptobrevininhumanhippocampusandcortexhavebeencorrelatedwithcognitivedeficitsinAlzheimer’sdisease(Szeetal.,2000).
