Synaptotagmin1isasynapticvesiclemembraneglycoproteinthatiswidelyexpressedthroughouttheCNSandisgenerallythoughttoactastheCa2+sensorintheregulationofexocytosisandneurotransmitterrelease(LittletonandBellen1995).Recentstudiesindicatethatsynaptotagmin’sCa2+mediatedbindingofSNAP25isessentialfortheCa2+dependenttriggeringofmembranefusion(Zhangetal.,2002).Ithasrecentlybeendemonstratedthatdiscreteresidueswithinthec(2)bbindingdomainofsynaptotagmin1independentlyspecifyendocyticrateandsynapticvesiclesize(Poskanzeretal.,2006).
